ABOUT KEVIN MATTHEWS POTTERY
The skill of balancing the egos, biases, labels, discrimination, rejections and disruptions is a challenge that I have learned to accept and cope with. Using art as a way to display a message is intriguing to me. Several of my pieces are memories both good and bad that I have gained over the years of my journey and I have titled them accordingly. Music has always played a role in my creativity and a source of comfort and release from life and those that are blind to the people around them. For those that see me working in the studio notice that I am constantly listening to music.
I have lost two very special people in my life, my mom, and my best friend Allen. Their memories and tragic loss reminds me that life is too short to get caught up in the societal norm. Since their losses I have had a goal to find inter peace in all aspects of my life, this goal has brought me to my current desire to be a full time professional artist (not just a potter) and teach others my gift. The trials and tribulations I have had to endure along the way have not been easy but my burning desire prevails and I continue to work forward and not look behind.

In the studio you will enjoy the same atmosphere and work space as artist Kevin Matthews. Customize parties or set up a Clay Date to suit your needs. Pick your favorite radio station, bring your IPod and enjoy your favorite music in surround sound, also available is a DVD player and TV. Finished pottery and magazines fill the room with color and ideas, or create your own original masterpiece. Our glaze and colors are non-toxic and lead-free. The glazes normally wash out of clothes with no stains but dress appropriately you are in a working clay studio.
There is no Studio Fee. The cost of the piece you pick covers all of your paint, use of design tools, and glazing and firing (this part Kevin does for you). No reservations are required unless you want to customize a party or make a Clay Date.
The ceramic pieces that you pick to paint range from $12 on up, with most pieces being in the $12-$30 range.
All items are mid range high fired for durability and are food safe, dishwasher and microwave safe.
Your artistic piece will be ready in 4-5 days for you to pick up and enjoy. This gives us the time needed to let your under-glaze fully dry, then we clear glaze them which needs to dry for another day, then they go in our kilns which fire at 2165*F for about 14 hours, then they need time to cool down slowly. So your artwork really is one of a kind, and hand made!
Clay Dates are designed to give you and up to one other person unlimited private access to the studio during non-store hours, such as Thursday, Friday, or Saturday nights. The total cost of a Clay Date is $65 an hour, that includes: clay, glazes, firings, and tools. There are no additional fees. |
